It’s getting closer to Christmas and many of you will be wringing your hands in worry at what to get the hard-to-choose-for friend or relative. If they are a fan of paper and/or sustainability then we have 5 suitable suggestions:
Get Crafty, Make Your Own Paper
We love paper, you love paper, so why not try your hand at making some? While there are a range of in-person paper-making workshops all over the country, a great gift for the paper fan this Christmas would be a home paper-making kit. Coming with everything you need to craft a unique selection of papers, this kit from the Ethical Superstore is fully recyclable and made using the minimal impact on the environment.
Feline Pet Presents
If you want to give your feline friend something a little more classy than a discarded box to sit in over Christmas, there are plenty of cardboard cat houses on the market. From simple brown boxes with windows to elaborate three-storey townhouses, there’s a vast range of pet abodes to choose from. Out favourite is this gingerbread house from the Cats Protection League, the UK’s largest cat welfare charity.
The Gift Of Giving
One of the world’s most pressing problems is the destruction of natural habitats and the wildlife that live in them, so a donation to an environmental charity would be a satisfying present for anyone. The international conservation charity World Land Trust protect some of the world’s most biologically significant and threatened habitats all over the world, but one of their key focus areas at the moment is the cloud forests of Colombia. A donation to the appeal would help the organisation protect the Guanacas Reserve – one of the few remaining cloud forests in Colombia’s Antioquia region. Donate £25 or more and you can gift the donation to a family member or friend.
Post-Lunch Entertainment
Christmas isn’t Christmas without a jigsaw to lose yourself in (and avoid watching The Sound of Music), and there’s never been a better material to make a good jigsaw than cardboard. When buying a jigsaw, make sure it’s made from 100% recycled material, and the image is printed on FSC-sourced paper, like the range from Bloom Puzzles. This UK company also make sure their jigsaw boxes are FSC-certified and their puzzle piece bags are fully recyclable.
How Bad Are Bananas
As far as sustainability goes, you can’t go wrong with a book, and if that book is about environmental issues then you become a print superfan. The recently updated How Bad Are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint of Everything by Mike Berners-Lee is a fascinating look at how much impact certain actions and products actually have carbon emissions to help us all reduce our carbon footprints, from running an electric bike all the way up to hosting a World Cup.
